Assistant Rabbi - Rabbi Avram Block

Rabbi Avram Block joined the YIJE community as its Assistant Rabbi in September 2015. Hailing from Roslyn Heights, NY, Rabbi Block grew up in the home of his parents Rabbi Robert and Beile Block, the founding and current rabbinic couple of the Roslyn Synagogue. His childhood home and community laid the foundation for Rabbi Block’s career and its impact colors all aspects of his rabbinic work.

After spending three years of post-high school study in Yeshivat Sha’alvim, Rabbi Block went on to graduate with honors from Yeshiva College with a BA in philosophy and psychology followed by Semicha from the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary. During his time in RIETS, Rabbi Block studied for five years with Rabbi Michael Rosensweig and in the final year served as Rabbi Rosensweig’s assistant where he delivered the weekly chazarah (review) class. Rabbi Block is also completing a MA degree in Medieval Jewish History from the Bernard Revel Graduate School.

Together with extensive work in his hometown community, Rabbi Block brings to YIJE significant rabbinic experience, including two years on the Judaic studies faculty of the North Shore Hebrew Academy High School as well as two yearlong rabbinic internships in Congregation Beth Israel Abraham Vohliner in Overland Park, KS and Park East Synagogue on the East Side of Manhattan.  He has served as scholar-in-residence at a number of congregations in the greater NY area and beyond.

In addition to serving as the Assistant Rabbi of YIJE, Rabbi Block is completing a doctorate in psychology from St. John’s University. In his doctoral studies, Rabbi Block is interested in the impact of social media usage on children and adolescents as well as treatment strategies for children with attention disorders and has presented research at numerous academic conferences around the country.

Rabbi Block is the proud husband of Dena Block. A graduate of Barnard College and the Stern College Graduate Program for Advanced Talmudic Studies, Dena is a teacher of Talmud and American History at Ma'ayanot Yeshiva High School in Teaneck, NJ. Additionally, Dena is a certified Yoetzet Halacha and has served in this capacity in several communities in the NY area including Great Neck and Manhattan. Dena currently serves as the Yoetzet Halacha for the Mt. Sinai Jewish Center of Washington Heights and has visited various communities around the country as a scholar in residence.

Dena and Rabbi Block are the proud parents of Zvi and Ayala. As lifelong Mets fans, the Blocks are ecstatic to finally be able to call Queens their home.
