Dear Friends,

With great thanks and anticipation, we invite you to join us for the 43rd Anniversary Dinner of the Young Israel of Jamaica Estates on Thursday, June 16, 2022.

This year, it is our privilege to honor two outstanding YIJE couples who have distinguished themselves as pillars of the Queens and greater Jewish world over many years and who honor us with the opportunity to recognize all they have contributed to Jewish life in our community.

Dorothy and Julie Berman graced the YIJE community with their arrival fourteen years ago. In addition to their local contributions which include participation and sponsorship of many YIJE educational programs and the firsthand benefit of Julie’s wisdom when presenting shiurim at Seudah Shlishit or Perek on the Lawn, the Bermans reach far beyond our neighborhood and have had a truly global impact on the greater Jewish Community. Both Dorothy and Julie have been long-standing board members of many of the organizations that are most impactful to our way of life. The very long list includes Julie’s leadership of the RIETS Board of Trustees, Conference on Jewish Material Claims against Germany, the Orthodox Union, JTA, Conference of Presidents of Major American Jewish Organizations and many more. Dorothy has held leadership roles including President at Yeshivat Har Etzion, Vice President of AMIT Women and Vice Chair of the Board of Overseers of Stern College. The Bermans have three children, nine grandchildren and thirteen great-grandchildren, including locally, Myra & Simcha Aminsky and Judy & Zev Berman and families.

Estee and Mayer Estee Waxman have lived, and raised their four wonderful children, in Jamaica Estates for the last 23 years. They have been active leaders both locally and in the greater Jewish Community. In addition to several years as Sisterhood President, Estee has served on the YIJE Board of Directors, the Housing, Welcoming and Purim committees. Mayer has served as volunteer Rav and Baal Tokea for the High Holidays for the last 20 years and has countless shiurim and divrei torah over the years, including the founding and leadership of the Shabbat Daf Yomi Chabura. In the greater community, Mayer has represented YIJE as a delegate to the National Council of Young Israel and currently serves as the Executive Director of the Queens Jewish Community Council. Estee and Meyer have also chaired both the YIJE Dinner and Journal.

At this year’s dinner we will also express a special Hakarat Hatov David Schachner in recognition of his volunteer service to our synagogue over the last 32 years. David spends countless hours working behind the scenes assisting with everything from inventorying and ordering supplies to food service setup to front door security. During the recent pandemic, David took on the responsibility of completing and submitting paperwork to multiple agencies, acquiring many thousands of masks and other PPE for use at YIJE. Among the many committees David has been involved with are Security, Food Service, Events, 5K Run and Clothing Sale.

We invite you to join us for an in-person dinner and program at the Sephardic Temple in Cedarhurst on June 16th. Your presence will enhance the evening, add to the success of the dinner and celebrate our community as we pay tribute to these pillars of community.
